Os verbos
"should" e
"ought to" funcionam como verbos modais, com isso, cumprem as seguintes caraterísticas:

Sempre vão seguidos de um verbo em infinitivo sem "to".
É errado dizer: "I should to go", o correto é: "I should go".
A forma "ought to" é uma exceção, neste caso o correto é "I ought to go".
Em frases negativas se omite o "to", resultando: "I ought not go"

As terceiras pessoas do singular (he, she, it) não ganham "-s" no presente simples.
É errado dizer: "he shoulds", o correto é: " he should".

Não admitem os auxiliares (do, does, did) na forma interrogativa e negativa.
É errado dizer: "Do I should...?", o correto é: "Should I...?".

Não possuem tempos compostos nem progressivos.

Atenção:
O verbo modal "ought to" se usa para fazer recomendações, dar conselhos ou fazer suposições. Tem um uso muito parecido a "should", mas é menos frequente e aparece normalmente no inglês britânico. Os americanos usam mais "should".
A forma negativa cumprida "ought not to" a podemos encontrar assim "ought not", omitindo a partícula "to". Ambas formas são frequentes e corretas. E a forma negativa curta "oughtn't to" apenas se usa atualmente.
Atenção:
Os verbos "should" e "ought to " não possuem uma forma própria no passado, para formar o passado usamos: "have + particípio", que normalmente expressa uma ação passada que não chegou a acontecer.
Exemplos:
You should have eaten more for breakfast.
(Você deveria ter comido mais no café da manhã.)
I should have told them the truth.
(Eu deveria ter-lhes dito a verdade.)
We ought to have listened to the guard.
